Kegel exercises were originally developed in 1948 by Dr. Arnold Kegel, to help women preserve urinary control following the birth of a child. Kegal movements can also help diminish age-related urinary incontinence and bladder control issues resulting from prostate problems, notes the University Of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).

Women can find their pelvic muscles by placing a finger in the vagina and squeezing the surrounding muscles. Men are able to find the muscle by inserting a finger into the rectum. Both men and women can find the correct muscle by acting as though they are trying to hold in gas or stop the flow of urine.

Make sure you don’t tighten muscles in your stomach, thighs or buttocks. When you are certain you have located your pelvic floor muscles, empty your bladder prior to doing Kegel exercises.
